The Man Behind the Mask

I never thought I would carry the name survivor.
But I now know that coercion, manipulation, and narcissistic abuse live under the same roof as domestic violence.

With me, he wore a mask—
gentle, quiet, tender,
 a soul who seemed fragile,
who needed care, attention, love.
 Behind the curtain, though,
 he was something else entirely—
a predator cloaked in softness,
feeding on the vulnerabilities of others,
driven by the hunger for control.

We owned a dance studio together, and he wasn’t the mentor who I thought he was, but a monster. When the truth came into the light, through hidden apps and secrets uncovered,
I finally saw past the disguise.
The mask slipped,
and I finally chose myself—
my safety, my healing, my freedom. And most importantly, to protect the students who had also been victims of his manipulation.

Now, as a survivor,
I speak not only to mend my own wounds
but to raise awareness of covert narcissism—
the kind that hides in plain sight,
the kind that doesn’t shout but whispers,
the kind that leaves no visible scars,
 only years of unseen bruises
from psychological and emotional abuse.

I tell my story because silence protects the abuser. And breaking the silence sets us free. I want to encourage others not to be afraid to face the hurt. We can change that pain and turn it into something positive.
We can take back our power because what happened to us doesn’t define who we are!
